Compared to his voluptuous wife, Myrtle, Tom, Daisy, Jordan, and, of course, the titular Gatsby himself, pale-faced, shrinking, passive George can almost escape your memory ââ¬â and perhaps he entirely would if he didnââ¬â¢t turn out to be one of the novelââ¬â¢s most crucial characters. George has the least ââ¬Å"page timeâ⬠of the seven major characters, but is important because of the crucial role he plays in the novelââ¬â¢s conclusion. Because of this, we donââ¬â¢t know quite as much about Georgeââ¬â¢s personality, motivations, or characteristics as we do about other characters. George's Physical Description First things first. What does George look like? Here is Nickââ¬â¢s brief description: He was a blonde, spiritless man, anaemic, and faintly handsome. When he saw us a damp gleam of hope sprang into his light blue eyes. (2.8) Myrtle and George, despite being married for twelveyears, are strikingly different people. While Myrtle is outgoing and vivacious, George is shy and bland ââ¬â in fact, his physical description takes just a couple of sentences while Myrtle has a paragraph-long introduction. Although there is a hint of what drew Myrtle to him all those years ago, a ââ¬Å"faintâ⬠attractiveness, Nick emphasizes Georgeââ¬â¢s weighed-down, damp, "spiritless"affect. In fact, he is explicitly tied to the Valley of Ashes, the bleak industrial part of Queens where he and Myrtle live. (Check out our article about the Valley of Ashesfor more analysis on this point.) This initial description makes it clear to the reader that George is a much less active, ambitious person than his wife, setting up his resentment and the power struggle that leads to his extreme violence at the end of the novel. George's Backstory Twelve years before the novel begins, George married Myrtle wearing a borrowed suit (2.6, 8.69). They have been living above his garage in Queens for the last years. Perhaps Myrtle was drawn to him since he owned (or would soon own) his own business, or else he somehow convinced her ââ¬Å"he was a gentlemanâ⬠¦[who] knew something about breeding,â⬠but this faà §ade breaks down quickly, and George seems resigned to his working class life. While Myrtle claims to no longer care for George, he still seems smitten with her, as evidenced by how he ââ¬Å"hurriedlyâ⬠follows her suggestions (2.17). Tom Buchanan starts doing business with George Wilsonââ¬â¢s garage a few months before the start of the novel, even promising to sell him a car. But unbeknownst to George, Tom Buchanan patronizes the garage since he is having an affair with Myrtle. The affair is Myrtleââ¬â¢s first (2.7). Perhaps this is why George Wilson remains in the dark about it until the novelââ¬â¢s tense climax. George's Actions in the Novel We first meet George in Chapter 2, when Tom drops by his garage. Tom has some kind of car-related business with George, but it'snot completely clear exactly what this transaction is. None of it is spelled out, but here is what I think is happening: George is trying to buy Tom's car in order to resell it, and Tom is stringing George along by pretending to consider George's lowball offer because Tom actually is there to set up a liaisonwith Myrtle. We donââ¬â¢t see George again until Chapter 7, when Tom stops by the garage in Gatsbyââ¬â¢s yellow car to get gas on the way to Manhattan. George tells Tom that he needs money because he wants to move west with his wife. By then heââ¬â¢s begun to suspect his wifeââ¬â¢s affair.Georgehas actually locked Myrtle upstairs and plans to keep her there until they have the money to move (7.3). Later that day, George and Myrtle fight. We donââ¬â¢t get details of the fight, except a snippet that Michaelis, a nearby cafà © owner, hears as she runs out of the house: ââ¬Å"Throw me down and beat me, you dirty little coward!â⬠(7.314). At that moment, Daisy and Gatsby speed by in the yellow car. Myrtle, assuming Tom is driving, rushes out into the road ââ¬Å"waving her hands and shoutingâ⬠(3.15). Daisy runs her over without stopping, leaving Myrtle dead. In Chapter 8, George, reeling from his wifeââ¬â¢s violent death, loses whatever faith he had in God after and decides to find the owner of the yellow car. The police assume thathe goes garage to garage asking about theyellow car until he findsJay Gatsbyââ¬â¢s name and address (8.107).Using this information, George walks the rest of the way to Gatsbyââ¬â¢s mansion (8.107). He shoots Gatsby, who is swimming in his pool for the first time all season. He then shoots himself, and ââ¬Å"the holocaust was completeâ⬠(8.3). In Chapter 9, the mystery of how George found Gatsby is solved. Tom confesses that George first came to Tomââ¬â¢s house that night. There, Tom toldhim that the yellow car was Gatsby's and insinuated that Gatsby was the one who killed Myrtle and the one who was sleeping with her (9.143). George Wilson proves the old action movie adage: never take your eyes off the guy with the gun. George Wilson Quotes Generally he was one of these worn-out men: when he wasn't working he sat on a chair in the doorway and stared at the people and the cars that passed along the road. When any one spoke to him he invariably laughed in an agreeable, colorless way. He was his wife's man and not his own. (7.312) After our first introduction to George, Nick emphasizes Georgeââ¬â¢s meekness and deference to his wife, very bluntly commenting he is not his own man. Although this comment reveals a bit of Nickââ¬â¢s misogyny ââ¬â his comment seems to think George being his ââ¬Å"wifeââ¬â¢s manâ⬠as opposed to his own is his primary source of weakness ââ¬â it also continues to underscore Georgeââ¬â¢s devotion to Myrtle. Georgeââ¬â¢s apparent weakness may make him an unlikely choice for Gatsbyââ¬â¢s murderer, until you consider how much pent-up anxiety and anger he has about Myrtle, which culminates in his two final, violent acts: Gatsbyââ¬â¢s murder and his own suicide. His description also continues to ground him in the Valley of Ashes. Unlike all the other main characters, who move freely between Long Island and Manhattan (or, in Myrtleââ¬â¢s case, between Queens and Manhattan), George stays in Queens, contributing to his stuck, passive, image. This makes his final journey, on foot, to Long Island, feel especially eerie and desperate. Some man was talking to him in a low voice and attempting from time to time to lay a hand on his shoulder, but Wilson neither heard nor saw. His eyes would drop slowly from the swinging light to the laden table by the wall and then jerk back to the light again and he gave out incessantly his high horrible call. ââ¬Å"O, my Ga-od! O, my Ga-od! Oh, Ga-od! Oh, my Ga-od!â⬠(7.326-7) George is completely devastated by the death of his wife, to the point of being inconsolable and unaware of reality. Although we hear he treated her roughly just before this, locking her up and insisting on moving her away from the city, he is completely devastated by her loss. This sharp break with his earlier passivepersonaprefigureshis turn to violence at the end of the book. ââ¬Å"I spoke to her,â⬠he muttered, after a long silence. ââ¬Å"I told her she might fool me but she couldnââ¬â¢t fool God. I took her to the window- ââ¬Å" With an effort he got up and walked to the rear window and leaned with his face pressed against it, ââ¬Å"- and I said ââ¬ËGod knows what youââ¬â¢ve been doing, everything youââ¬â¢ve been doing. You may fool me but you canââ¬â¢t fool God!ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å" Standing behind him Michaelis saw with a shock that he was looking at the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg which had just emerged pale and enormous from the dissolving night. ââ¬Å"God sees everything,â⬠repeated Wilson. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s an advertisement,â⬠Michaelis assured him. Something made him turn away from the window and look back into the room. But Wilson stood there a long time, his face close to the window pane, nodding into the twilight. (8.102-105) George is looking for comfort, salvation, and order where there is nothing but an advertisement.This speaks to the moral decay of New York City, the East Coast, andeven America in general during the 1920s. It also speaks to how alone and powerless George is, and how violence becomes his only recourse to seek revenge. In this moment, the reader is forced to wonder if there is any kind of morality the characters adhere to, or if the world really is cruel and utterly without justice ââ¬â and with no God except the empty eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg. Common Essay Topics/ Areas of Discussion First, we have a bit of advice for writing about poor Mr. Wilson. Since George has very little page time compared to the other main characters, you will most likely have to write about him in relation to Tom Buchanan, or in an essay that compares the strivers (George, Myrtle, Gatsby) with old money (Tom and Daisy, and even Nick and Jordan). You are less likely to have to write about George alone. Explore how to write a great compare and contrast essay about these or any other characters by reading our article! Georgeââ¬â¢s most important scenes come in chapters 7 and 8, during Myrtleââ¬â¢s murder and its aftermath, so make sure to read and annotate those chapters carefully if youââ¬â¢re writing about George. Look closely at his interactions with Tom and Myrtle, and also consider how George interacts with one of the novelââ¬â¢s most famous symbols: the eyes of Doctor T.J. Why do the characters in the book who are striving to increase their social status (Gatsby, Myrtle, George) end up losing while the old money (Tom, Daisy, and Jordan) get to walk away relatively unscathed? The fates of Gatsby, Myrtle, and George connect back to the theme on the broken promise of the American Dream, as well as a critique of the class system in 1920s America. How so? Tom and Daisy get to hide behind their money while Gatsby, Myrtle, and George end up dead. Specifically, Myrtle is run over by Daisy, Gatsby is killed by George (who is manipulated by Tom), and then George kills himself. So despite both Tom and Daisyââ¬â¢s direct complicity in both murders, neither of them face any consequences for their bad behavior. This is a stark indictment of the class system in 1920s America, in that the rich literally play by different rules than the poor (or the up-and-coming). The fates of George, Myrtle, and Gatsby also shatter any illusions about the possibility of social climbing in this world, or even in the promise of the American Dream itself. Whether you manage to amass a fortune like Gatsby, or just aspire to a better life like George, youââ¬â¢re still powerless in the face of old money, privilege, and classism in the United States. This intense pessimism is supported by Nickââ¬â¢s returnto the Midwest at the end of the novel and the somber mood of the ending. Whydoes George fail to notice Myrtle and Tomââ¬â¢s affair? You might be wondering, ââ¬Å"how on earth does George not notice his wife is cheating on himâ⬠? After all, we know that Tom is not making a big effort to hide Myrtle from his friends, going to popular restaurants with her, and even dragging Nick along with him to the apartment heââ¬â¢s rented for her in New York. Plus, Tom comes visits the garage and he and Myrtle barely hide their relationship. So it could seem odd that George really has no clue. However, when you consider that George has no access to Tom's social circles, and that he rarely leaves his garage, George hasno way to know what his wife is doing in New York and who sheââ¬â¢s seeing (remember, this is an era long before cell phones and Facebook!). Furthermore, George is also super invested in doing business with Tom, so that's an incentive to subconsciously overlook whatever is going on. Georgeââ¬â¢s failure to notice the affair for so long speaks to Georgeââ¬â¢s complete isolation from the world of old money and, more broadly, the huge class divides in America in the 1920s. Tom and Daisyââ¬â¢s world is so separate from Georgeââ¬â¢s that they can live whole lives that he is entirely unaware of. This stark separation becomes clear in Georgeââ¬â¢s strange, sad walk to Long Island where he kills Gatsby and ends his life. For George, the class lines in society were impossible to safely cross. Each episode features a different teenage girl, with the episode typically beginning when she is 4 and a half to 8 months into her pregnancy. The episode typically ends when the baby is a few months old. The series is produced in a documentary format, with an animation on notebook paper showing highlights during each episode preceding the commercial breaks. ââ¬Å" (Reference from wikipedia) MTV is criticized for creating an acceptance of teen pregnancy. By creating a show about pregnant teens, the showââ¬â¢s creators may be sending the message to teens that it isnââ¬â¢t a big deal if they become pregnant. It is proven that teens are often influenced by TV. Actually, according to a study conducted by The National Campaign ââ¬Å"most teens (79% of girls and 67% of boys) say that when a TV show or character they like deals with teen pregnancy, it makes them think more about their own risk of getting pregnant or causing a pregnancy and how to avoid itâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Teen Pregnancyâ⬠). Parents feel that the popularity of ââ¬Å"16 and Pregnantâ⬠will allow teens to think that teen pregnancy is acceptable. The National Campaign states that ââ¬Å"research has found that the sexual content in media can influence teensââ¬â¢ attitudes about sex and contraception and may also influence their sexual behaviorâ⬠(ââ¬Å"The National Campaignâ⬠). It is because of this statistic that MTV is teaming upà with the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy to create viewing guides on 16 and Pregnant. The 16 and Pregnant viewing guides will hopefully allow parents and educators to start discussions with teens encouraging them to make the right decisions when dealing with their sexual health. Why teen pregnancy is a cause for concern? The issue of teenage pregnancies is a cause for concern, and it is necessary that we draw the attention of the authorities to itââ¬â¢s diverse effects. According to statistics compiled in February 2004 by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, 34% of teenage girls get pregnant at least once before they turn 20 (which is about 820,000 per year). Despite the fact that teen pregnancy rates are declining in the United States, this data illustrates the fact that the United States has the highest pregnancy rate in the industrialized world. Teen pregnancy has negative affects on teen parents, their children, and society in general. Negative Affects on Teen Parents Teen mothers are statistically less likely to continue their education through high school and college. In fact, only about 1/3 of teen mothers ever earn a high school diploma, and only 1.5% of teen mothers receive a college degree by the time they are 30 years of age. In addition to the decline of education prospects, teen mothers also have increased health risks. In fact, more than a quarter of pregnant teens report physical abuse in their relationships. Other health risks include disorders such as: anemia, hypertension, obesity, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDââ¬â¢s). Anemia- Anemia is a disease where the number of red blood cells falls below normal and the body gets less oxygen as a result. Therefore, the body has less energy than it needs to function correctly. When the number of red blood cells decreases, the heart has to work harder, which means that it has to pump more blood in order to distribute oxygen throughout the body. As a result, one can develop a rapid heartbeat or another serious condition that enlarges the heart muscle, which can cause heart failure. Hypertension- When someone has hypertension (also known as high blood pressure), the force of the blood against ones artery walls are too strong. Over time, this excessive pressure can damage your arteries as well as your heart and kidneys. Hypertension is rather dangerous, for there are no warning signs or symptoms unless the problem is severe. Hypertension can lead to strokes, and other deadly afflictions. Obesity- While we all need some fat tissues in our bodies, having too much body fat is known as obesity. Obesity is a serious medical disease that affects about 14% of adolescents in the United States, and is the second leading cause of preventable death. STDââ¬â¢s- Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDââ¬â¢s) are diseases that are contracted and spread by having sex with someone who has one of the diseases. Sexual activity can include contact with the mouth, anus, vagina and penis (all of which are capable of giving as well as receiving STDââ¬â¢s). These can be serious illnesses and require immediate attention. Some STDââ¬â¢s, such as AIDS, are deadly and have no cure, therefore it is important to learn ways to protect yourself from STDââ¬â¢s such as: genital herpes, hepatitis B, chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhea, and HIV/AIDS. Negative Affects on Children Children born from teen mothers have a higher chance of experiencing health problems. In fact, children born to teen mothers have a 20% higher chance of being born with low birth weight, which is one of the most common complications found in children of teens. Low birth weight can lead to blindness, deafness, respiratory problems, as well as mental illness, cerebral palsy, and even death. Not only do children born to teen mothers have a higher chance of experiencing health complications, but they also typically receive less medical care and treatment than other children, born to older mothers. On another note, teen parents are young, inexperienced, and for the most part, lack a completed education. This has been known to lead to inadequate parenting, for one is too young to appropriately provide the kind of environment that children need to develop and mature properly. Eventually this will affect the childrenââ¬â¢s performance in school, forà children of teenage mothers score lower than average on standardized tests, and are about twice as likely to repeat a grade at some point in their education. Children born to teen mothers are also twice as likely to be victims of abuse and neglect. Negative Affects on Society Because teen pregnancy rates are so high in the US. 34% of all females get pregnant at least once before the age of 20. This can cost our society billions of dollars each year, as the majority of teen mothers are single parents, lack a complete education, and end up on welfare. Postwar Effects on Women The "feminine mystique" that American culture promotes is entirely dependent upon its ideas, beliefs, and needs of the time. American culture has always tended to influence women into doing what the day and age required. After men went to war there was a gap in the work force that needed to be filled. During World War II women were the most available to join the work force. Due to the discouragement to raise families during the Great Depression and the fact that most men of age had entered the war, many women were left without families to look after and men to take to take care of them. "Most women toiled at unskilled jobs; most were young, single, and without children" (307). This lack of family and funds left women with no other place to go besides the factories. Women's need for work was nursed along by the media as well as the public. "A rapidly expanding war economy absorbed most of the reserve labor force," (307) yet it still was not enough, the economy demanded a larger work force. This demand worked in cooperation with the availability of the women of the time. "'Commando Mary' and 'Rosie the Riveter' became symbols of women who heeded their country's call" (307). There were many enticements luring women to join the work force. These enticements included higher war wages, more available time and opportunity to work, and wartime restrictions on leisure activities. "Despite the general expectation that women would return to their home after the war, female laborers did not simply drop their wrenches and pick up frying pans" (310). After the war many women continued to work outside the home primarily to help support their families. After the war 28% of the labor force was female compared to the 24% prior to the war. When the war was over nearly one million women were laid off and another 2.25 million voluntarily left. These female losses in the work force were offset by the gain of 2.75 million women into the work force. "When women who had been laid off managed to return to work, they often lost their seniority and had to accept reduced pay in lower job categories" (310). Due to the severe segregation by gender, the postwar economic life for women was appalling. Postwar American life became organized around marriage and family. As men came back from the war they merged with the peacetime economy, taking jobs away from women and sending them back to the home.

A critical analysis of a magazine article Essay
Gail Porter is a popular British female celebrity. She has recently made it public knowledge that she has been diagnosed with alopecia. Alopecia is a condition that affects men and women, resulting in drastic hair loss. The magazine the article was taken from is called ââ¬Å"Closerâ⬠. This magazine has a wide target audience of British women of many ages. The article is presented as a personal description of her condition and its effects by Porter herself. The writer has appealed to the target audience in a good way, because the article is aimed at different audiences. It could firstly be aimed at women who have an interest in Gail Porter, due to the fact that she is a famous TV presenter, secondly it could be aimed at readers who have suffered from alopecia themselves, or know someone who has suffered from the condition. Thirdly the article could be aimed at young women, who are interested in celebrity gossip. The purpose of the text is that the writer is trying to inform readers about Porterââ¬â¢s condition, and also to entertain the audience, because the article could be known as celebrity gossip. Some readers may think the article is subtle, while others may disagree and think it has a hidden agenda. For example Gail has suffered from a terrible condition, if she were to inform readers about her trauma, she would not say, ââ¬Å"Before I went out ââ¬â to the launch of my new programme, Dead Famous Liveâ⬠, this implies the article does have a hidden agenda because she is secretly trying to promote her new programme. The article is in first person; therefore the audience is influenced into reading it straight away, because they feel they are reading the words of Gail herself. Pronouns have been used, which is very effective because this technique draws the reader into the article further. Emotive language has also been used, making the reader feel pity for her. This terminology draws readers into the text further, because they want to know more about how Gail is coping, therefore they will also take in the facts that Gail has launched an launched a new programme, has been to America, has recently had a baby, gone through a divorce and also has a new boyfriend. All of these facts appeal to different audiences, which is what, makes the article so effective. The structure of the text appeals to the target audience very well. In bold writing and quotations, it reads, ââ¬Å"I was scared Iââ¬â¢d be judgedâ⬠. This appeals to the audiences emotions drawing them into the article. It also reads on the top of the page ââ¬Å"Up close and personalâ⬠; this involves women because they feel they are actually getting up close and personal with Porter. The side story also appeals to the target audience because Carly Morrell is 22 years of age, therefore the side story appeals to a younger audience. I think overall the article is very appealing; women who read this article can be influenced into feeling pity for the TV presenter. This is easily done as the article comes across as subtle, however if readers were to read in between the lines they will realize the article in fact has a hidden agenda. If I were to read this article generally, therefore not analyzing it, I think I would also have been influenced by it and what it says.

Introduction to Waste Management Essay
Over the past few years, public concern has been growing over the disposal of wastes produced by health care facilities in the Philippines. Several reports have cited large, albeit inconsistent, figures of the amount of infectious waste hospitals in Metro Manila produce daily, and little information is available on what is done with these wastes, especially after the banning of incineration in the country. More recently, these concerns have been fueled by reports that some of these wastes end up in our open dumpsites and in some cases, in rivers, leading some sectors to call for the allowing of incineration once again. Health care waste can be managed properly without the use of incinerators that produce toxic air pollutants that pose threat to human health and environment. To begin with, not all of the wastes produced by hospitals are infectious or hazardous. With proper management and the use of well-known solid waste management tools such as segregation and recycling, the portion of a hospitalââ¬â¢s waste stream that poses risk to human and environmental health need not be cause of public fear. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2000, 21 million people all over the world were infected with the hepatitis B virus due to injections with contaminated syringes. Another 2 million people were infected with the hepatitis C virus due to the same cause, and about 260,000 were infected with HIV. Ironically, all these people acquired diseases as a result of the practices of the very institutions that should be protecting their health. The sheer nature of providing health care, unfortunately, creates wastes that can pose serious environmental and health risks to health care workers, waste handlers, and even waste pickers. This, however, is the case only if the wastes produced by health care facilities are not managed properly. In 2002, though, a WHO assessment conducted in 22 developing countries showed that 18% to 64% of health care facilities do not use proper waste disposal methods. While most of the waste produced by health care facilities is not any more dangerous than regular household waste, some types do represent a higher risk to health. According to the WHO, these include infectious waste (15% to 25% of total healthcare waste), among which are sharps waste (1%), body part waste (1%), chemical or pharmaceutical waste (3%), and radioactive and cytotoxic waste or broken thermometers (less than 1%). Improperly managed and disposed, these wastes can expose health care workers and the public to risk of infections. In order to fulfill the medical ethic to ââ¬Å"first do no harmâ⬠, the health care industry has a responsibility to manage waste in ways that protect both the public and the environment. Poor management of health care waste potentially exposes health care workers, waste handlers, patients and community at large to infection, toxic effects and injuries, and risks for polluting the environment. It is essential that all medical waste materials are segregated at the point of generation, approximately treated and disposed of safely. The purpose of this study is to have a practical understanding and to raise the lore of the patients and so as their significant others regarding the significance and essentiality of proper health care waste management, and also to raise the quality of the health care environment.

We Can All Understand Each Other My parents love to travel and my family will often go on vacations during school breaks. These vacations often involve countries in which English is not the first language, and can lead us to encounter language barriers and cultural differences. My Mom speaks a little Spanish and my dad has always claimed to speak French, as he grew up in Canada and took it in school, this is important, because when I was in middle school, we went on a big vacation to Tahiti.à Where, if you didnââ¬â¢t know, they mostly speak French.à My Dad was happy to be able to put his French to work.à And we were all ready to have him help navigate us through the various airports, markets and activities that we were going to do.à For me, the worst part of any trip is getting there. I do not like to fly and I especially do not like to fly over water, adding to that you have to get to the airport, which takes an hour and a half on a good day, then there are the long security lines at LAX, all the screenings, making sure you donââ¬â¢t have the long list of banned objects on your person or in your bag. Then you wait to board, then you wait to take off, then you sit and wait on the plane for hours on end. Did I mention I donââ¬â¢t like to fly? On this particular trip, because we were going to a French speaking country, on a French airline, they began all the take off instructions and warnings in French and talked for what felt like two minutes. Then they switched to English and literally just said ââ¬Å"we are going to take off nowâ⬠. My mom and I just looked at each other, shrugged and laughed. We decided to just go with it because we were about to spend three weeks surrounded by people we couldnââ¬â¢t understand, so why not start before we even left the ground. We saw our first real difference upon arrival in Papeete, which is the main airport for Tahiti. The runway led right out into the ocean and looked like we would just fly into the sea if we didnââ¬â¢t quite make it. The terminal was so small, that they used a little tractor like we use in our gardens at home to bring the bags in from the plane, and the actual airport consisted of a little straw covered hut, and a fold out table for luggage. Since we had planned to stay in a hotel near the airport because we had gotten in late, my mom started looking around for signs for shuttle busses. She soon realized that we would not need a bus, as the hotel was directly across the street from the ââ¬Å"airportâ⬠and we just got our bags and walked there, unlike at home there was no long lines, no traffic, just a flight of stairs up to our hotel. Our plan for the trip was to visit multiple islands and stay a few days at each. Some of the islands can be reached by boat, but others we did fly into on very small planes from very small airports, some little more than what seemed like grass huts. One particular difference in the security I will never forget. In America we have ââ¬Å"no weaponsâ⬠, ââ¬Å"no gas canistersâ⬠, ââ¬Å"no knivesâ⬠etc., on the signs. Well, in the airport on Raiatea, the sign said ââ¬Å"no cakesâ⬠. Yes, ââ¬Å"no cakesâ⬠, with a picture of a little pink birthday cake on it. I took a photo of it at the time, however I later jumped into the ocean with my phone in my pocket and lost that photo. We thought at the time that because people flew between islands so much maybe they took cakes for birthdays and there had been some mishaps, but mostly I just look back on it and I get a few laughs from it. I didnââ¬â¢t entirely understand everything that happened on these islands, yet you didnââ¬â¢t really need to. My mom can attest to this. We had planned a day on a little boat to just snorkel and be on the water. So, we went into town to get some baguettes and cheese for some sandwiches to eat on the boat. My dad parked near the dock, since it was really the only parking lot in the tiny little town, and we walked into town for some food. Weââ¬â¢d left the car for about half an hour and were walking back when we noticed this gigantic cruise ship, it completely dwarfed all the little huts around it, and was parked right in front of the dock. A line of 10 big tour busses had also decided to park there to wait for the tourists unloading to take them around the island. However, they had completely blocked in our car, there was nowhere for us to go. We turned to my dad and were like why dont you use all your French to get them to move. But he didnt quite know how to do anything about it. My mom however knew exactly how to fix the situation and decided to go talk to them. At this point you should know that she knows absolutely no French and no idea how to communicate with the bus drivers. But she decides to give it a try, she walks over as we all sit in the car, we could just see my short mother and her bright blond hair standing next to these huge Polynesian men trying to point and gesture and their busses. Neither her nor them could understand a word of what each other were saying, yet she still managed to communicate that she needed them to move. And surprisingly it worked. When we stay in our community and never venture beyond our comfort zones, we can forget that the rest of the world is a very different place than our little corner of it. People with different values, cultures, religions and languages are living happy fulfilled lives, just like me. They are just doing it in a different way. I enjoy seeing the differences in how people live their lives, and I can also appreciate that we can all still get along and make ourselves understood. The simple act of being friendly and open with strangers can go a long way to help communication and foster a good experience with others around the globe that we may one day encounter.

Roth v. United States Supreme Court Decision What is obscenity? This was the question put before the Supreme Court in the case of Roth v. United States in 1957. Its an important decision because if the government can ban something as obscene, then that material falls outside the protection of the First Amendment.à Those who wish to distribute such obscene material will have littleà if any, recourse against censorship. Even worse, allegations of obscenity stem almost entirely from religious foundations. This essentially means that religious objections to a specific material can remove basic constitutional protections from that material. Fast Facts: Roth v. What Lead to Roth v. United States? When it reached the Supreme Court, this was actually two combined cases: Roth v. United States and Alberts v. California. Samuel Roth (1893-1974) published and sold books, photographs, and magazines in New York, using circulars and advertising matter to solicit sales. He was convicted of mailing obscene circulars and advertising as well as an obscene book in violation of the federal obscenity statute: Every obscene, lewd, lascivious, or filthy book, pamphlet, picture, paper, letter, writing, print, or other publication of an indecent character... is declared to be nonmailable matter... Whoever knowingly deposits for mailing or delivery, anything declared by this section to be nonmailable, or knowingly takes the same from the mails for the purpose of circulating or disposing thereof, or of aiding in the circulation or disposition thereof, shall be fined not more than $5,000 or imprisoned not more than five years, or both. David Alberts ran a mail-order business from Los Angeles. He was convicted under a misdemeanor complaint which charged him with lewdly keeping for sale obscene and indecent books. This charge included writing, composing, and publishing an obscene advertisement of them, in violation of the California Penal Code: Every person who wilfully and lewdly... writes, composes, stereotypes, prints, publishes, sells, distributes, keeps for sale, or exhibits any obscene or indecent writing, paper, or book; or designs, copies, draws, engraves, paints, or otherwise prepares any obscene or indecent picture or print; or molds, cuts, casts, or otherwise makes any obscene or indecent figure... is guilty of a misdemeanor... In both cases, the constitutionality of a criminal obscenity statute was challenged. In Roth, the constitutional question was whether the federal obscenity statute violated the provision of the First Amendment that Congress shall make no law ...abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press ...In Alberts, the constitutional question was whether the obscenity provisions of the California Penal Code invaded the freedoms of speech and press incorporated by the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Courts Decision Voting 5 to 4, the Supreme Court decided that obscene material has no protection under the First Amendment. The decision was based on the premise that freedom of expression does not provide absolute protection for every possible utterance of any sort: All ideas having even the slightest redeeming social importance - unorthodox ideas, controversial ideas, even ideas hateful to the prevailing climate of opinion - have the full protection of the guaranties, unless excludable because they encroach upon the limited area of more important interests. But implicit in the history of the First Amendment is the rejection of obscenity as utterly without redeeming social importance. But who decides what is and is not obscene, and how? Who gets to decide what does and does not have redeeming social importance? On what standard is that based on?à Justice Brennan, writing for the majority, suggested a standard for determining what would and would not be obscene: However, sex and obscenity are not synonymous. Obscene material is material which deals with sex in a manner appealing to prurient interest. The portrayal of sex, e. g., in art, literature and scientific works, is not itself sufficient reason to deny material the constitutional protection of freedom of speech and press. ...It is therefore vital that the standards for judging obscenity safeguard the protection of freedom of speech and press for material which does not treat sex in a manner appealing to prurient interest. So, there is no redeeming social importance to any appeal to prurient interests? Prurient is defined as excessiveà interest in sexual matters.à This lack of social importance associated with sex is a traditionalist religious and Christian perspective. There are no legitimate secular arguments for such an absolute division.à The early leading standard of obscenity allowed material to be judged merely by the effect of an isolated excerpt upon particularly susceptible persons. Some American courts adopted this standard but later decisions have rejected it. These later courts substituted this test: whether to the average person, applying contemporary community standards, the dominant theme of the material taken as a whole appeal to prurient interest. Since the lower courts in these cases applied the test of whether or not the material appealed to prurient interests, the judgments were affirmed. The Significance of the Decision This decision specifically rejected the test developed in the British case, Regina v. Hicklin. In that case, obscenity is judged by whether or not the tendency of the matter charged as obscenity is to deprave and corrupt those whose minds are open to such immoral influences, and into whose hands a publication of this sort may fall. In contrast, Roth v. United Statesà based the judgment on community standards rather than the most susceptible. In a community of very conservative Christians, a person could be charged with obscenity for expressing ideas that would be regarded as trivial in another community. Thus, a person might legally sell explicit homosexual material in the city, but be charged with obscenity in a small town. Conservative Christians could argue that the material has no redeeming social value. At the same time, closeted gays could argue the opposite because it helps them imagine what life might be like without homophobic oppression. While these matters were decided over 50 years ago and times certainly have changed, this precedent could still affect current obscenity cases.
